General Job Description:

The Assistant Manager will assist in managing all day-to-day operations of the campus store.  They are responsible for providing and role modeling excellent service to all customers with courtesy and salesmanship while supervising and participating in the stocking and selling of merchandise and textbooks.  In addition, the Assistant Manager is expected to maintain a significant floor presence and availability to customers and staff while providing friendly and knowledgeable customer service to all internal and external customers.  The Assistant Manager must display a commitment to supporting the overall university mission, Tree of Life mission and demonstrate the university and Tree of Life’s values.

Duties / Responsibilities:

  • Assist the Store Manager in directing and supervising student and part-time employees in all day-to-day operations
  • Be competent in all aspects of the point-of-sale system, using cash registers and accurate cashing handling for daily monies received.  This would include securing tills
  • Supervise sales floor and cashiering functions and provide excellent customer service
    • Answer phones, check voicemails to assure quick responses on all bookstore requests
    • Coordinate activities related to the merchandising of textbooks, school supplies, clothing, and gifts
    • Maintain store appearance, organization, and cleanliness, including equipment such as rolling racks, shelving, hangers, signage, and display tables
  • Communicate effectively with university faculty, staff, students and campus affiliates  both in person and over the phone
  • Conduct store opening and closing procedures on a daily basis and prepare bank deposits
  • Assure maintenance of adequate inventory levels of the bookstore, estimate sales levels, determine and order needed supplies to maintain inventory levels
    • Prepare purchase orders as needed for inventory management
    • Assist with pre-inventory preparation and conducting annual bookstore inventory
  • Develop, updated, and implement policy and procedural changes as necessary.  Present or submit proposed changes to policies and procedures to management for approval as required
  • Prepare daily administrative and operational reports as required
  • Coordinate with Store Manager for IT for the upkeep of computers, registers, printers, and scanners
  • Coordinate with Store Manager and Marketing for promotional, seasonal, and special events
  • Maintain confidentiality with regards to student financial aid records and student accounts
  • Assist with other stores as needed
  • Assist and/or organize and implement off-site sales at university sporting events
  • Other duties as assigned

Textbook Functions:

  • Confer with Store Manager on logistical management of book returns, staffing, and shipments
  • Maintain textbook location rea according to Tree of Life procedural policies and timeline of duties
  • Train student workers/temp help on shelf location for inventory purposes
  • Maintain books in shelf location at all times
  • Assist with textbook buyback and rental returns
  • Ship and receive textbook orders, maintain shipping calendar and prepare freight shipments
  • Coordinate with Store Manager on processing online orders and Textbook Butler orders as well as preparing processed orders for Textbook Butler delivery and pick up

Off-Campus Events:

  • Confer with Store Manager on staffing for home football games
  • Responsible for logistics of merchandise pre- and post-game
  • Coordinate IT needs: registers, receipt printers, credit card scanners, and extension cords
  • Maintaining adequate inventory records of merchandise entering and leaving the store

Skills / Qualifications preferred:

  • A high school diploma or equivalent
  • 1-3 years of experience in retail preferred with a knowledge of selling, merchandising, and inventory control
  • Effective communication with strong teamwork skills
  • Detail-oriented with ability to self-start and work independently
  • Computer skills, especially in Microsoft Office and social media applications
  • Able to work with a flexible schedule, including some early evenings and weekends
  • Able to lift up to 50 lbs., carry, shelve, bend, and stretch in the performance of bookstore operations as well as stand for long periods of time
